We are an independently owned natural pet care store that focuses primarily on the needs of dogs and cats. We first opened our doors in October of 2001 and since have been privileged to become a part of the wonderful community of Issaquah. Providing healthy food and safe products for your pets is extremely important to us, but it is not all that we are about. In January of 2003 there was a tragic event that opened our eyes to what a great honor it is to be a part of this community. Due to a freezer malfunction in a neighboring business, there was a fire that destroyed our building in the middle of the night. During this time we had a store cat named Cindi. It was devastating to lose not only the store, but our beloved cat as well. Our customers and the people of Issaquah rallied behind us to show support in every way possible. Our building owner assured us that the building would be re-built, but that it would take at least a year to do so. This meant that we needed a temporary place to do business. Right away we were contacted by the owner of Blue Sierra (a local fish store on Front St.), who kindly offered us some space within his store. Howard of Cougar Mountain Veterinary Clinic also offered us some space in his basement. But while both of these offers were unbelievably thoughtful, they were just not realistic in regards to the amount of space we needed or coding restrictions of the city. Rowley Properties stepped up to the plate. As stated on their website, they really do believe family and community come first. They allowed us to lease a space for a year while our original location was re-built. This was a hugely generous offer on their part, as we are just a small business and most commercial spaces only lease out 5yrs at a time. When it came time to open our doors in this new temporary location is when we really began to see the love and support from the community. We opened for business the day of our first delivery. We had only a cash register and a borrowed picnic table to put it on. The products for the time being would be placed into piles on the floor. It may not look pretty, but at least our customers would be provided for. When our delivery arrived however, surprisingly so did supplies throughout the day and weeks to come. Our customers brought us in shelving they no longer needed, baskets to put treats in, paper, staplers, tables, microwave, vacuum, and many other items to help us get back on our feet. Some of our vendors and distributors also brought us shelving from their warehouses to put the heavy bags of food on. Not only did they bring us shelving and supplies, they spent several sweaty hours to help us set it up as well. The generosity of this community is truly unfathomable and unforgettable. From this experience we learned how to turn tragedy into triumph as a community working together. For this we will always be grateful. And we will always be honored to be a part of this community. There was not much to be salvaged from the fire, but one thing that did amazingly survive was our first dollar. How it survived is a mystery, but it hangs on our wall today in our new building as a reminder of our gratitude and as a symbol of what can be accomplished by helping others.
